7 June marks the 550th anniversary of the first mention of one of Tallinn's symbols and landmarks, the Kiek in de Kök gun turret. The first record of the tower's construction comes from the Tallinn City Council's archives, where an entry was made on 3 June 1475: 'A new tower was also built at this time behind the Boleman's sauna'. On 3.3.1975, a tower was also erected in the same building, and on 3.3.1938, the tower was also added to the old tower behind the sauna on Knight Street, which belonged to Councillor Boleman. The mighty war hut became one of the symbols of the resistance and defences of the people of Tallinn, and played a major role in saving the city from Ivan the Terrible's forces when they besieged the city in 1570 and 1577.
